The Attack On Titan universe is defined by its major characters and pivotal moments. For example, Bertholdt’s destruction of Shiganshina was legendary, and Erwin’s counterattack against Zeke was among the most profound moments of the series.
However, it is often understated that the actions these metaphorical (and literal) giants take have ramifications on the world around them, rippling to characters so minor that many fans have even forgotten about their existence in the first place. Through identifying the series’ most obscure characters, we can appreciate their own contributions as the story unfolded.
9 Karina Braun Was A Self-Loathing Eldian & The Mother Of Reiner
Karina Braun was the mother of Reiner and an Eldian living in the internment zone. She genuinely believed the tenants espoused by the Marleyan state, the most prominent of which was self-debasement.
In this regard, it’s easier to understand the Armored Titan’s zealous adherence to his masters and his willingness to betray his friends after the attack at Utgard Castle. Not only would he risk disgracing his country if he failed, he’d also be dishonoring his own parents.
Marlowe was a former member of the Military Police who was subjected to its corruption firsthand. He saw government resources being sold to line private pockets and was harshly punished for attempting to chastise the men responsible.
After this revelation, he would join the Scouts under Erwin Smith and participate in his heroic charge against Zeke Yeager. Unfortunately, he was among the countless casualties suffered during the battle, failing to share Floch’s fortune to survive and continue the mission their leader had boldly laid out for them.
8 Hitch Was A Scout Who Seldom Participated In Direct Missions
Hitch was a member of the 104th and a comrade of Marlowe. She is lesser known than her constituents since she hasn’t participated in many of the series’ important missions such as the battle for Shiganshina and the raid on Marley.
After the Rumbling occurred and Annie Leonhart broke free from her crystal prison, she attempted to take Hitch hostage in order to facilitate her escape. However, the scout displayed a surprising amount of aptitude in thwarting her, flipping the Marleyan on her back and pinning her to the ground.
7 Dimo Reeves Had An Abbreviated Redemption Arc
Dimo Reeves was a merchant who first made his debut attempting to push a massive cart through one of the few bottlenecks into the inner wall during the invasion of Shiganshina. His avarice put many innocent lives at risk and could have resulted in high casualties if Mikasa didn’t step in.
Fortunately, he has expressed remorse for his actions and agreed to help the Scouts sine. When Eren was forced into custody, he smuggled him a razor so that he could activate titan form if necessary. Kenny Ackerman was privy to Reeves’ allegiances and promptly slit his throat at the soonest opportunity.
6 Marcel Was The First User Of The Jaw Titan Who Died Almost Instantly
Marcel was handily the least discussed Warrior candidate considering his brief life span. He was almost immediately devoured by Ymir once the Marleyan spies infiltrated Paradis, sacrificing his life to save Reiner.
While his name is often invoked by Porco and even Braun himself, his lack of physical presence renders him an unimpressionable character and one that many of the series’ fans have forgotten about ever since the flashback of his debut.
5 Frieda Reiss Was The Least Known Founding Titan
Out of the nine titans, Frieda Reiss was handily the least well known as she was slain shortly after being introduced and in a flashback of Grisha Yeager. Her only presence outside this encounter was through her brief interactions with Historia.
The details of her demise would be elucidated later, when Eren connected with Ymir through Zeke. By using the true power of the Attack Titan, he convinced his father to murder the entire Reiss family so that he could inherit the Founder in the future.
4 Nick Embodied A Zealous Minority In Paradis
Pastor Nick was a zealot who claimed that Paradis’ walls should be left alone, with nothing (whether artillery or people) mounting them. Though it initially seemed that his beliefs stemmed from religious dogma, it was later revealed that he simply knew the truth about the Rumbling and what the borders were actually made out of.
Despite his obstinate presentation, Nick has an incredibly high tolerance for pain and an immense spiritual fortitude. He was undaunted by Hange’s threats or those of the Military Police even as he was being tortured to death.
3 Isabel Was Levi’s Friend Before Being A Scout
Before Levi joined the Scouts, he lived in Paradis’ underbelly with Isabel and his other comrades. Her bubbly disposition served as a welcome contrast to his own, and she followed Ackerman into Erwin Smith’s service when the time came.
Despite what aptitude Isabel demonstrated with ODM gear, she was killed on her first official mission by a Pure Titan. Levi was devastated by this and showed no compunctions about the emotional toll her passing took on his psyche. When Erwin attempted to tell him to pull himself together, Ackerman lunged at him with murderous intent.
2 Dhalis Zachary Oversaw Eren’s Military Trial
Dhalis Zachary oversaw Eren’s trial in military court after his titan nature was revealed. At Erwin Smith’s request, he allowed him to go with the Scouts under the pretense that he would remain an asset of the state.
This decision would prove fatal many years later. After the invasion of Marley and subsequent re-imprisonment of Eren, there were riots in the streets demanding his release. The Yeagerists rigged Zachary’s office with a bomb that would claim his life, sending his corpse soaring from the building before dozens of horrified onlookers.
1 Udo Was A Friend Of Gabi & Falco Killed In Eren’s Marley Attack
Like Gabi, Udo was a candidate to inherit the Armored Titan. Fiercely perceptive and intelligent, he understood Marley’s corruption though acknowledged that they still treated Eldians comparatively well to most of the world.
He would be crushed by debris during Eren Yeager’s attack on Marley, much to Gabi’s horror. This would validate the propaganda that she heard about the denizens of Paradis regardless of the circumstances surrounding the invasion, compelling her to mount the Scouts’ zeppelin and assassinate Sasha.
