James Gunn Says ‘Never Say Never’ For Guardians of the Galaxy 4

James Gunn hasn’t entirely ruled out the idea of directing a fourth Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

In response to a fan question asking “Would you do a fourth Guardians movie if you got a chance?” Gunn responded by saying, “Me? Never say never but I see Vol 3 as the end of the Guardians’ story I started telling back with Vol. 1”

To date, the only individual Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise to release a fourth solo movie is the Avengers movies with Avengers: Endgame. However, the Thor series will go down with this route with the upcoming feature Thor: Love and Thunder. There are also plans for a fourth solo Captain America title with Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) as the titular hero.

Gunn has directed both of the original Guardians of the Galaxy movies to critical and commercial success, with the first two installments taking in $772.7 million and $863.7 million, respectively. Plans are underway for a third entry in the franchise to be written and directed by Gunn for release in May 2023.

Plot details on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are scarce but Gunn has shared a handful of details on the project over the years. Most notably, Gunn has confirmed that Rocket will have a significant role in the project while all of the songs for the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 soundtrack have been selected.

Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to begin filming in 2021. It opens in theaters May 5, 2023.
