There is, perhaps, no Mortal Kombat character quite as iconic as Sub-Zero. The powerful, ice-based warrior has been a fan-favorite for years, due in large part to his interesting story and interactions with Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion. In this video, we’re going to break down just what you need to know about Sub-Zero in the Mortal Kombat series.
In the original video game, every warrior had their reason for fighting in the titular Mortal Kombat tournament. That story, which made its way into Mortal Kombat, saw Bi-Han/Sub-Zero destroying Scorpion and his people. However, while Bi-Han thought he’d accomplished his goal, Hanzo returned from the land of the dead to destroy his old foe — and he succeeded. But that’s just where the story starts to get interesting.

Created by John Tobias and Ed Boon, Mortal Kombat debuted in 1992. The fighting game soon proved controversial due to its high levels of violence and gore. Still, that didn’t stop the series from proving immensely popular, and the first film adaptation of Mortal Kombat, which was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, released in 1995. While that movie was for many years the best-reviewed video game of all time, the sequel, 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, is generally considered one of the worst. For its part, 2021’s Mortal Kombat holds a 54% on Rotten Tomatoes among critics, putting it above its two predecessors.
Directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan, Mortal Kombat stars Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Bridges, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, Matilda Kimber as Emily Young and Laura Brent as Allison Young. The film is now in theaters and on HBO Max.
