HBO Max Announces Latin America Launch With Over 100 Local Productions

HBO Max celebrated its impending launch in Latin America by announcing plans to develop more than 100 local productions in the region over the next two years.

The streaming platform confirmed in a press release last week that 33 new productions are already in production and will be released exclusively as Max Originals on HBO Max.

HBO Max is a new platform that is committed to telling the best stories that generate experiences and emotions in our fans across Latin America,” said Tomás Yankelevich, Chief Content Officer of WarnerMedia Latin America. “Currently, we are working on productions that cover a wide variety of different genres and formats, with all kinds of local stories that are relevant to our consumers, reinforcing our commitment to local communities with our great Latin American talent and most certainly with our audience. And this is only the beginning.”

Among the series being developed as part of the Latin America initiative are the action-comedy Búnker and the contemporary family and romantic drama Amarres, which are both being produced in Mexico. Additionally, the youth and musical drama Dias de Gallos is being filmed in Argentina.

Other programs currently in the works at HBO Max include a drama series called The Missing, about an agency that focuses on missing person cases, a four-episode sports documentary out of Argentina called Bilardo, El Doctor del Fútbol and a stop-motion animation series out of Mexico titled Frankelda’s Book of Spooks.

Ahead of its launch in Latin America, HBO Max also recently announced it’s developing a reboot of The Brothers Garcia, which initially aired on Nickelodeon from 2000-2004. The new English-language sitcom will be called The Garcias and will focus on a normal American family that also happens to be Latino. The series will split production between San Antonio, Texas and the town of Puerto Aventuras in Riviera Maya, Mexico.

“We want audiences to see that we are totally American and part of the ‘new mainstream,'” NCP Partner and show creator Jeff Valdez said about the revival. “There are no themes of narcos, border walls, gang bangers or maids anywhere in this series — a fact that we are very proud of and hope that Hollywood will follow suit. We are extremely proud of the fact that this show will easily achieve 90+% positive Latino inclusion both in front of and behind the camera.”

HBO Max initially launched in the United States in May 2020, with plans to expand into Latin America and the HBO-branded streaming services in Europe (the Nordics, Spain, Central Europe, the Baltics and Portugal) this year. The service arrives in Latin America and the Caribbean in June 2021.
