WARNING: The following contains spoilers for U.S. Agent #5 by Christopher Priest, Georges Jeanty, Karl Story, Matt Milla & VC’s Joe Sabino, on sale now.
Following John Walker’s inclusion in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, there has been a reignited interest in the former Captain America. In Marvel’s new U.S. Agent comic, Walker is once again trying to show that he’s the patriot the country deserves, once again donning his black suit and shield as a less level-headed version of Steve Rogers.
However, he may be in over his head in Virginia as he’s facing a new and deadlier U.S. Agent, who’s being manipulated by John’s sister, Kate. At the conclusion of the latest issue, John achieves a major victory, but it comes at a terrible price.

In this issue, Kate is working with a former government official, April Manning, as part of an insurrectionist plot to correct the course of America. To accomplish this, they’re both taking unique serums that turn them into Super-Soldiers for a short time. April, who is now going by the name Saint, already dealt John a massive blow by taking out Battlestar/Lemar Hoskins, which leaves John broken as his former sidekick was trying to do the right thing to continue down his own path of redemption.
It gets worse as John realizes that Kate manipulated Saint in order to gain access to the serum. Her ultimate plan is to expose S.H.I.E.L.D.’s failed American Kaiju Project that was designed to create monstrous new Super-Soldiers. As John battles one of the creatures created by the project, Saint fights Kate in an effort to stop her. The battle takes a tragic turn, when Saint shoots Kate in the head. As John nears the battle, it appears that his sister is dead. This boils over to a fight between him and Saint, that leaves both men unconscious.
However, John emerges victorious with Saint bloody, beaten and passed out. Still, it’s a hefty price because in the epilogue, Val Cooper, his government liaison, reveals that Kate is barely alive. John’s sister is in I.C.U. experiencing psychosis due to the serum, which is similar to what John endured in his controversial career.
Kate’s mind is warping her family history and she has no clue what’s real. This, coupled with Lemar’s brutal beating, brings the tally to two people close to him that John has lost in a very short period of time. This has the potential to cause a relapse in John’s own mental stability, which is never a good thing for the brutal former Captain America.
