The Falcon and the Winter Soldier creator Malcolm Spellman believes that fans missed Bucky Barnes’ first real hero moment during a scene in the show’s finale.
When asked in an interview with Inverse about any Easter eggs in the series that fans have yet to spot, Spellman explained that while he wasn’t aware of any missed Easter eggs, one thing had not been talked about. “It’s a failure in our writing,” Spellman said of the scene. “When we were taking Bucky on his journey, we felt like the moment in Episode 6 where he frees the GRC members and one of them stops to say, ‘Thank you, you saved my life’ — we always considered that Bucky’s first hero moment.”

The moment comes during a tense fight where Bucky confronts antagonist Karli Morgenthau, who represents the Flag Smashers, alongside former Captain America, John Walker. When Morgenthau sets an armored trunk containing GRC hostages on fire, Bucky changes his focus from stopping the villain to helping those in trouble. Bucky frees those trapped, receiving thanks for his good deeds, before returning to his fight with Morgenthau and her allies.
“That was a huge deal to us, but I have not heard anyone mention it,” Spellman continues. “We were like, ‘That’s it. Bucky is on his way to freeing himself form this burden of being the Winter Soldier. Now, he gets to go and be a hero for the first time.’ That’s not to say that he hasn’t been heroic before, but that’s the moment when he allows himself to feel like a hero. Not many people caught that.”
The Marvel Cinematic Universe series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier leaned heavily into the character development of the two titular characters. With the Falcon, fans of the show got to see his progression from winged crusader to the star-spangled hero himself, Captain America, but with Bucky Barnes, his arc was a little less tangible, focusing primarily upon his growth from the villain he was made out to be as The Winter Soldier to the hero and Avenger he is now.
Directed by Kari Skogland, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Wyatt Russell, Noah Mills, Carl Lumbly and Daniel Brühl. The series is now streaming on Disney+.
