Master of None: Who & What Season 3 Is About | CBR

Following two engaging seasons in 2015 and 2017, Master of None is back for a third season on Netflix. Titled Master of None: Moments in Love, the series will shift from Dev (Aziz Ansari) to one of his closest friends, Denise (Lena Waithe), as she deals with commitment. The character perspective change is not surprising in lieu of the sexual misconduct allegations concerning Ansari in 2018. However, it’s left fans curious as to how the show would continue without him. Now, with the first trailer out, let’s dissect what to expect in Master of None Season 3.

Season 2 followed Dev romancing the Italian, Francesca. Season 3 seems to be patterned with a similar aesthetic, providing a more confined setting as Denise is living with Alicia (Naomi Ackie). It’s a bit like Dev and Rachel in terms of emotional content, with issues such as marriage, fertility and personal growth unraveling in the modern love story written by Ansari and Waithe.

Not much is revealed in the trailer apart from the couple smoking, cleaning, bathing and making a life together. However, fans should expect Denise’s fear of long-term relationships to crop up. She profusely dated in the past seasons, offering advice to Dev a lot, so it’ll be interesting seeing how she settles down with Alicia, who seems less restless.

Denise hasn’t given the impression she’s up for having kids just yet. Not that long ago, she was sowing her wild oats, running around the New York dating scene with Dev and company. Now, while Dev might not be in play much, there is a shot of him and Denise fist-bumping in the trailer, which hints he’s checking up on her, maybe even maturing to the point that he’s now the one offering advice.

Season 3 could also reveal insight into Dev’s romantic life. Season 2 left it vague as to whether Francesca broke off her engagement to Pino and came to stay with Dev. Fans also want closure for Rachel. In their brief meeting last season, there was a spark between her and Dev after they broke it off and traveled the world to find themselves.

Ultimately, as much as Season 3 of Master of None is Denise’s story, and an intimate one at that, it paves the way for other guests to cameo, including Dev’s bestie, Arnold, with who Denise has a brother-like bond. Brian, their other friend, could also factor in. Fans are eager to find out if Arnold has also settled down after almost ruining his ex’s wedding in Season 2.

Brian and Dev’s parents may also appear. Together, they produced hilarious moments trying to connect with their millennial kids in a digital era, all while navigating cultural differences in America, migrant histories and personal problems of their own. Given Master of None‘s big changes, the best bet is probably a greater focus on Denise’s family and them reacting to her potentially starting a family since they just learned of her sexual orientation.

Season 3 of Master of None will premiere on Netflix on May 23.
