Indie Roguelike Curse of the Dead Gods Gets Free Dead Cells DLC

Roguelike fans, rejoice! If you’re a fan of Curse of the Dead Gods, you’re likely a fan of Dead Cells; now you can get the best of both worlds. Both games have been widely praised for their distinctive art styles and buttery smooth gameplay mechanics, meaning this is a crossover that promises to be Curse’s most exciting content yet. However, the update isn’t a purely aesthetic one – Curse fans are treated to new weapons, new relics, an extra curse and more.

Dead Cells has since been remembered fondly by roguelike enthusiasts for its unique art style and rewarding gameplay mechanics. With 3D models rendered to sprite sheets, Dead Cells presented players with an innovative design, turning pixel art on its head. Likewise, the art style is at the core of the Curse experience. Shadows with sharp edges and impressive lighting effects create a visually striking yet dark dungeon aesthetic. Both of these games feature an extremely limited story, with the main focus on combat. The story is delivered via art style and a unique atmosphere, something both these games have in abundance. Curse’s latest update does an impressive job of meshing the two distinct styles while keeping the content lore-friendly.

Being a sizable patch, this update offers more than just aesthetic improvements. Three new weapons have been added from Dead Cells and fine-tuned to suit the gameplay mechanics of Curse while maintaining their iconic design, which Dead Cells fans will instantly recognize. The Crossbow of the Condemned is an entirely new ranged weapon adapted from the unforgettable Explosive Crossbow, capable of firing projectiles that explode upon impact, delivering widespread area damage. Dead Cells’ iconic broadsword has been renamed the Broadsword of the Knight but keeps all of its desirable attributes – both the second attack and finisher are guaranteed a critical hit.

These weapons are great additions, but the Sword of Conjunctivius may be the most exciting prospect. Dead Cells fans can likely recall agonizing attempts at defeating one of the six Keepers, Conjunctivius. With lots of health and quick movements, the boss was an absolute nightmare to kill, even for seasoned Dead Cells’ players. The Sword of Conjunctivius embodies the spirit of its Keeper, for it is devilishly powerful. But, the sword’s enormous damage potential is not without its drawbacks – wielding this weapon will enable any enemy to kill you with a single attack.

The update wouldn’t be an acceptable crossover without incorporating the Prisoner’s iconic flaming head. Curse of the Headless, a brand new curse, does exactly that. Like all curses, it comes with positives and negatives, significantly upgrading your movement speed while reducing your damage resistance. But, the content doesn’t stop there. Chests work very differently in Curse of the Dead Gods and Dead Cells’ Cursed Chest has been revamped to fit the format. To provide more of a challenge, the only way to unlock the chest is by overcoming a certain number of enemies in the room without getting hit. No risk is without reward in Curse; successful players can choose from three items, with one item always being cursed.

The Curse of the Dead Cells latest update yields generous amounts of exciting new content that fans of both games alike can enjoy. Death is hardly a rarity in Curse of the Dead Gods, but with added weapons, curses and chests, reaching your impending doom has never been more fun.
