WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the seventh episode of Invincible“We Need to Talk,” streaming now on Amazon Prime.
In the Invincible TV show, while there are quite a few changes from the source material, what’s been kept consistent is Nolan/Omni-Man seemingly having ulterior motives for Earth. As a Viltrumite, it looks like rather than protecting it, he’s here for more nefarious reasons, evidenced by him killing off the Guardians of the Globe. It all leads to his most destructive battle, right before he tells Mark he needs to talk about their future. But once again, the series makes some key alterations.

Invincible puts Nolan through the wringer much more — emotionally and physically as he’s already prepping to tell Mark the truth with Deb discerning his secret. It shows Nolan as vulnerable and desperate, something the comics held out on early on.
In the comics, Nolan simply stopped a giant leviathan at Coney Island, offering salutations to a public that adores him. Here, the leviathan, dubbed Hail Mary, has actually been enhanced by Cecil and the Global Defense Agency. Unlike in the books, they know Nolan’s a traitor, and after trying to blow him up a couple times, having Cecil shoot him up and then sending Reanimen that D.A. Sinclair made, the boss decides to drop the monster. And this beast is one that brutalizes him and Mark, who ends up helping save his dad. It makes the conversation to come so much harder as both are risking their lives for the other.
During his Kaiju battle, Nolan is blindsided by the Immortal, who just got reawakened by the Mauler Twins. They dug his corpse up and reanimated him, trying to use a collar to enslave the ‘Superman’ for their own use. That plan goes awry and the Immortal attacks Nolan, remembering how Omni-Man killed him and the Guardians. With Nolan already weak, the Immortal batters him even more and almost gouges out his eyes, making it a lot bloodier than the source material and garnering him some revenge. However, it quickly ends with Nolan punching through him and ripping him in half with relative ease, all before Mark sees and desires an explanation from his shady dad.
This now creates an avenue for him and Mark to possibly fight if the teen doesn’t like what his dad has to say. More so, the media, as well as the GDA, are already locked on, which means whatever bombshell Nolan drops will be picked up.
Invincible stars Steven Yeun, J.K. Simmons, Sandra Oh, Seth Rogen, Gillian Jacobs, Andrew Rannells, Zazie Beetz, Mark Hamill, Walton Goggins, Jason Mantzoukas, Mae Whitman, Chris Diamantopoulos, Melise, Kevin Michael Richardson, Grey Griffin and Max Burkholder. The series is produced by Skybound, and executive produced by Robert Kirkman, Simon Racioppa, David Alpert and Catherine Winder. New episodes are released Fridays on Amazon Prime Video.
