Mortal Kombat Signed One Actor for at Least Four Sequels | CBR

With the new Mortal Kombat movie now in theaters and on HBO Max, it has been announced that at least one actor has been signed for multiple films.

Joe Taslim plays the iconic Sub-Zero in the rebooted film franchise. While speaking with Variety, he discussed being signed for four more films if this movie is successful and the franchise continues to move forward. “If this one’s successful, maybe we do more,” he said.

Mortal Kombat has had previous feature film releases. The first was Paul W. S. Anderson’s 1995 film, which was a commercial success and became a cult classic. Its 1997 follow-up did not fair as well on either front. An attempt was made to revive the film franchise in 2010 when director Kevin Tancharoen released a short film as a proof of concept. Ultimately, the project did not move forward.

The current film has been in development since 2015 with producer James Wan, who is best known for directing various horror films, Furious 7 and Aquaman. Simon McQuoid took the reigns of 2021’s Mortal Kombat as the director with a script by Greg Russo and David Callaham. Early reviews have been generally positive, with some noting that it is respectful of the source material.

The first Mortal Kombat game was released for a variety of systems in 1992. It was designed by Ed Boon and John Tobias and was developed and published by the now-defunct company Midway. Controversy has surrounded the game since day one due to the level of violence, something that has only increased as the franchise has continued to grow.

Directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan, Mortal Kombat stars Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Bridges, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, Matilda Kimber as Emily Young and Laura Brent as Allison Young. The film is now in theaters and on HBO Max.
