DC has released preview pages from Wonder Girl #1.
The series, written and illustrated by Joëlle Jones, centers on DC’s new Wonder Girl — Yara Flor — as she undergoes a journey to Brazil to learn more about her mysterious origins. She is then given a gift by the Brazilian gods. Wonder Girl #2 will see the goddess Hera attempt to make Yara her champion, while Wonder Girl #3 finds her encountering the god Eros.
“The story picks up with a brief vignette of Yara saying goodbye to her aunt at the Boise airport,” Jones said while discussing the story for Wonder Girl, “and then it’s straight on to Brazil! This trip opens up a huge world to her full of exciting characters. It’s incredibly exciting for her, but full of challenges both fun and dangerous.” In addition to writing and illustrating Wonder Girl, Jones will also provide cover art for the series. Other artists will provide variants, including J. Scott Campbell and Rafael Grampá.
Jones previously introduced Yara Flor in the Future State: Wonder Woman limited series, with the Wonder Girl solo series being announced in November 2020. A Wonder Girl series was in development at the CW, until executive producer and showrunner Dailyn Rodriguez announced that the network decided to pass on the project.
Written and illustrated by Joëlle Jones with colors by Jordie Bellaire, Wonder Girl #1 goes on sale May 18 from DC Comics.
