TMNT: Jennika Just Took the First Step Towards Saving the Turtles’ Future

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Jennika II #6 by Ronda Pattison, Jodi Nishijima, Shawn Lee, and Bobby Curnow, on sale now.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been facing down some scary odds lately. Between the oversized mutants rampaging through the city and a dark future having been foretold, it doesn’t seem like the Heroes in a Half-Shell can catch a break, and none of the Turltes are feeling the pressure like Jennika. The Fifth Turtle stands as the crux of everything that happens next, and her dark past has just caught up with her in the worst way possible. Thankfully, the Fifth Turtle also happens to be the strongest, and she might have just taken the biggest step yet in saving the future for all of the Heroes in a Half-Shell and their friends and allies.

Jennika has been doing everything she can think of to distance herself both from her sordid past as well as the ominous and foreboding future that a grown-up Lita has traveled through time to warn them about. Unfortunately, Jennika was dragged back into the criminal underworld against her will. The wife of a man she assassinated years ago, Lucia, has taken her captive and is even threatening her own son’s life in an attempt to coerce Jennika into training her personal army. When left alone to consider her options, Jennika is visited by the young boy, whose life is also on the line. When asked, she confirms for him that she was the one who he watched kill his father, but that she is far removed from that lifestyle. She also promises him that they’re both going to escape unharmed, and without harming anyone else if they can help it.

With a little showmanship from Junior, Jennika unshackles her chains and leads him out of Lucia’s compound and into the sewers. There she leaves Junior with April O’Neil, promising again that things will be okay before she leads Lucia and her men on a chase up to the city streets.

It doesn’t take long for Jennika to lose her pursuers, nor does it take long for the police to catch up with Lucia and her goons. By the time the dust has settled, Junior has been given a chance at a life removed from the violence he is used to, and Jennika is free to go home to appreciate the things that matter most to her, namely, the young Lita who is watching her every move.

Jennika has been cold and distant towards the adult Lita from the future who warned her about what could happen. Knowing that she could be the cause of a terrible future was a shocking revelation for Jennika, and the idea has haunted her ever since, even making her keep her distance from everyone who cares for her.

After watching the heartbreaking circumstances of Junior’s family, Jenn has opened up more than ever to the possibility that she isn’t just the person who can doom the future, but she’s also the one who can save it. And it all starts with accepting the love and support that is all around her, even if she doesn’t always know how to do that. Assuming Mutant Town as a whole can keep itself together, it looks like things might be okay for the Splinter Clan for the first time in a very long time.
