WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Invincible Season 1, Episode 6, “You Look Kinda Dead,” available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
One of the most shocking moments in Invincible happened right in the series premiere episode. The world-renowned superhero Omni-Man lures the premier super-team, the Guardians of the Globe, to their remote, mountain headquarters and singlehandedly slaughters them all in a graphically gory battle. As suspicions swirl over who murdered the Guardians, Omni-Man is placed at the investigation’s center. And the superhero’s wife, Debbie Grayson, launches her own examination that proves her husband is the true culprit behind the world’s most heartbreaking set of murders.

Ever since news of the Guardians’ murder broke, Debbie began to notice Nolan Grayson was reacting strangely, starting with him angrily insisting on claiming the superhero costume he wore the night he attacked the Guardians rather than let it fall into the custody of the Global Defense Agency. Debbie grew suspicious of her husband over his callous attitude to Red Rush’s widow’s reaction to the speedster superhero’s murder. Not to mention the demon detective Damien Darkblood was personally investigating Nolan over the crime. While the GDA remands Damien back to Hell, Debbie found his case book and Nolan’s hidden, bloodied costume while her husband was away.
Debbie took the bloody costume to Art Rosenbaum, the biggest superhero tailor, for forensic analysis. Nolan realized what was going on but was too late to stop his wife from bringing the costume to Art. Analyzing the blood and other forensic materials on the costume, Art and Debbie realized it was Omni-Man that attacked the Guardians of the Globe rather than an external aggressor or the Guardians striking out at Nolan first. Afterward, Nolan catches up with Art over beers to ascertain how much he knows, hinting at his own concerns of giving up the life he built for himself. Back at home, Debbie confirms she knows Nolan murdered the Guardians, with Nolan visibly frustrated that his secret has been uncovered.
While the motives for Omni-Man’s heinous murders and his true Viltrumite mission have not been disclosed, his reactions to Art and Debbie discovering his culpability showcases that he may not be as committed to villainy as it appears. Rather than murder Art or Debbie to maintain his secrecy, Nolan has spared both for now. Instead, he contemplates how far he is willing to go to accomplish his mission, and if he’s willing to sacrifice his family and friendships for it.
With his parents split over the revelation of Nolan’s actions, Invincible will learn sooner rather than later the truth about the Guardians of the Globe’s murders. All his life, Mark Grayson has been groomed by his father to embrace his Viltrumite heritage, unaware that Nolan intended something far more sinister for his son as he gained his powers. And with Cecil Stedman and the GDA already aware that Nolan is the superhero killer but seeking a way to stop the Viltrumite, things are about to come to a head for Omni-Man as more and more people become aware of what he has done.
Invincible stars Steven Yeun, J.K. Simmons, Sandra Oh, Seth Rogen, Gillian Jacobs, Andrew Rannells, Zazie Beetz, Mark Hamill, Walton Goggins, Jason Mantzoukas, Mae Whitman, Chris Diamantopoulos, Melise, Kevin Michael Richardson, Khary Payton, Grey Griffin and Max Burkholder. The series is produced by Skybound, and executive produced by Robert Kirkman, Simon Racioppa, David Alpert and Catherine Winder. New episodes premiere Fridays on Amazon Prime Video.
