How The Walking Dead ‘Reuses’ Zombies to Film During COVID | CBR

Like many television productions, AMC’s The Walking Dead is being forced to get creative with its production methods due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In fact, series star Jeffrey Dean Morgan says that in order to limit the number of people on-set, only about 20 actors have been cast to play all of the final season’s zombies.

One actor playing a zombie (or, more accurately, a walker) in The Walking Dead Season 11 is none other than Morgan’s son, Augustus “Gus” Morgan, which Jeffrey discussed during a recent interview with Conan O’Brien. “He’s playing a child walker, which — if you watch the show — I think we’ve had like one or two of them in 10 years. It just doesn’t happen. So, there’s something very special about that,” Morgan said, noting that his wife, Hilarie Burton-Morgan, has also appeared on the show. “It’s turned into a little bit of a family business.”

He continued, “One of the things about the COVID of it all is that, this year, we’re only using like, say, 20 zombies, ’cause we’ve hired them full-time, for the full year. And so, they’re a different zombie every episode — maybe more than one zombie. And so, Gus is also tested. He’s tested along with the rest of the family. And so, we know that he’s good to go… it just has worked out really well. So, he’s 11 and he gets to be on The Walking Dead in the final season and it’s super, super exciting. We’re very pumped about it.”

The Walking Dead stars Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Lauren Cohan, Josh McDermitt, Christian Serratos, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Khary Payton and Cooper Andrews. Season 11 premieres Aug. 22 on AMC.
