Some sort of power system is a staple of most shonen anime. These systems allow the characters to draw upon a well of power that they use to fight their way through enemies and achieve their dreams. Chakra from Naruto is pretty widely known, but a new power system that’s gaining traction is cursed energy from Jujutsu Kaisen.
It’s almost impossible to make an entirely unique power system, so cursed energy and chakra have a fair amount of similarities. However, there are still plenty of factors that make each of these systems very unique.
10 Alike: There’s A Limited Supply For Each Power System
As with most power systems, chakra and cursed energy are both finite sources. The characters can’t just throw out attacks and moves as many times as they want. There’s a limit to how much of this power they can draw upon before they are drained of it for a while.
This is an important feature to have so that none of the characters in the series are too powerful and can just throw out moves thoughtlessly. It also provides a goal for the main characters to grow stronger so they can access more chakra or cursed energy.
9 Different: Chakra Is Well-Known, But Cursed Energy Isn’t
In the world of Naruto, almost everyone knows about the existence of chakra. It’s taught that it’s inside each person, and most inhabitants of the world know about ninja and what they are capable of when using chakra.
In Jujutsu Kaisen, people that can wield cursed energy keep a much lower profile. They are rarer than ninja in Naruto, and wield their cursed energy secretly to protect humanity behind the scenes.
8 Alike: Using Chakra And Cursed Energy Strategically Is The Best Way
With a couple of rare exceptions ( like Gojou and other incredibly high-level ninja) cursed energy and chakra are better used strategically rather than with brute force.
Very few characters in either series have such a deep well of power that they can blast through their enemies thoughtlessly, so using your brain with cursed energy or chakra is necessary to succeed. This makes the fights in both series incredibly interesting to watch.
7 Different: Cursed Techniques Can’t Be Copied, But Chakra Techniques Can
There are hundreds of different techniques that ninja and jujutsu sorcerers use with chakra and cursed energy, but there is one key difference. Cursed energy techniques can’t be copied by others and are completely unique to the user.
Chakra, on the other hand, is the complete opposite. While some techniques or jutsu are incredibly hard to master, most can be learned by anyone capable of wielding chakra. This holds true especially for the base nature techniques like earth wall.
6 Alike: Each User Has A Unique Style Or Technique
Most anime would be boring if the power system gave each person the same abilities. Chakra and cursed energy give each user a unique path forward that allows them to create techniques that only they can use effectively.
Cursed energy techniques are extremely specialized with users being able to do everything from summoning creatures to swapping places with others with a clap. Chakra users can use similar base techniques, but most have specialized jutsu that others can’t use like the famous rasenshuriken or Indra’s arrow.
5 Different: Chakra Has Specific Elemental Natures
Cursed energy techniques are more similar to superpowers in the sense that each one is incredibly different from the next. Chakra, on the other hand, is mostly based on natural elements.
Each person has a certain affinity for an element and is strongest when they base their techniques around that element. That’s why so many jutsu in Naruto are water style, earth style, etc. Cursed energy techniques are all unique and rarely involve the elements.
4 Alike: Neither Option Can Be Used Successfully By Itself
Chakra and cursed energy give their users access to some incredible abilities, but neither power system can carry the user through their worlds alone. Ninjas that use chakra also use taijutsu, which is physical hand-to-hand that can help supplement their use of chakra abilities.
Jujutsu sorcerers have weapons that they rely on that can help destroy cursed spirits or augment their existing techniques. Relying only on chakra or only on cursed energy is a quick way to get defeated.
3 Different: The Origin Of Chakra And Cursed Energy Are Entirely Different
Despite their similarities, cursed energy and chakra have completely different origins. Chakra was created by Kaguya, who is the mother of chakra. She is the reason that ninja are able to use their abilities, even though they now draw their chakra reserves from themselves instead of her.
Cursed energy is a naturally occurring energy. It’s created from the negative emotions of mankind, so it’s always around. Jujutsu sorcerers are just the people that can draw on it and use it effectively.
2 Alike: Both Power Sources Come From Within The User
While some power sources come from outside the user, both the jujutsu sorcerers and the ninja produce their power sources from inside. This is also why both energies are limited as the body can only create so much.
Cursed energy and chakra coming from within the body allows the user to use their techniques from anywhere and makes it that their abilities are always available unless they are drained by an outside source.
1 Different: Cursed Energy Is Much Less Versatile In Application
Cursed energy gives the user a unique skill set that they can then gently expand upon, but it’s nowhere near as versatile as chakra. Chakra can be shaped into many different elements and used in jutsu that are both useful and powerful.
There are also other applications that ninja use chakra for like running up walls or being able to walk on water. Chakra can also be used to heal others, put people into illusions, and augment physical abilities. While cursed energy is very specific in its application, chakra is great for jacks of all trades.
