Borderlands Adds True Blood’s Janina Gavankar as a Key New Character

The Borderlands film adaptation has cast Janina Gavankar as a key new character not featured in the original Gearbox Software, Telltale Games and 2K Games franchise.

According to Deadline, Gavankar will costar in the film as Commander Knoxx, a newcomer created for the video game movie. She’s the latest actor to join the Borderlands cast since production began April 1, along with Édgar Ramirez as the personification of the Pandora weapons manufacturer Atlas and bodybuilder/actor Olivier Richters as Krom, the ruler of the bandits that roam the film’s untamed setting.

Gavankar’s previous roles include the skinwalker Luna Garza on HBO’s True Blood and Star City Police Detective McKenna Hall on The CW’s Arrow. More recently, Gavankar played weekend co-host Alison Namazi on Apple TV+’s The Morning Show and costarred as Angela, the ex-wife of Ben Affleck’s character Jack Cunningham, in the sports drama The Way Back. She has also done voice work in video games like 2017’s Star Wars: Battlefront II, where she played Iden Versio, the commander of Inferno Squad.

Launched in 2009, the Borderlands video game series consists of first-person role-playing shooters set on the planet Pandora, a world ravaged and then abandoned by mega-corporations in search of its mineral riches. A Borderlands film adaptation was announced prior to the release of the best-selling Borderlands 3 in 2019, with casting beginning in May 2020. The movie’s latest script draft was written by Craig Mazin, who’s also a writer/producer on HBO’s upcoming The Last of Us series adaptation.

The full synopsis for the Borderlands film reads,

Lilith, an infamous outlaw with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of the universe’s most powerful S.O.B., Atlas. Lilith forms an alliance with an unexpected team – Roland, a former elite mercenary, now desperate for redemption; Tiny Tina, a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg, Tina’s musclebound, rhetorically challenged protector; Tannis, the scientist with a tenuous grip on sanity; and Claptrap, a persistently wiseass robot. These unlikely heroes must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power. The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other.

Directed by Eli Roth, Borderlands stars Kevin Hart, Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black, Florian Munteanu, Arianna Greenblatt, Haley Bennett, Édgar Ramirez, Olivier Richters and Janina Gavankar. The film has yet to receive a release date.
