Bleach: The 10 Best Villains, Ranked By Their First Appearances

Bleach is a series with a staggering number of villains. This is because the villains are usually part of larger groups that pose long and daunting challenges to the protagonists. Such groups include the Espada, the Sternritter, and the Fullbringers. Fans can learn a lot about a character from their first appearance.

The first appearance usually alludes to a character’s role in the story, their power level, their personality, and their relationships. This first impression is crucial, as it can build intrigue when it comes to both the character and the plot. Characters with a memorable first appearance are often difficult to forget.

10 Nnoitra Gilga: He’s Easy To Miss

The Espada gathered together

Nnoitra may be a memorable villain thanks to the cruel things he did to the other Espada, but his first appearance is too easy to miss. He is far from being the star of the scene, as the Espada gather together to meet Wonderweiss, whose presence in the upcoming war would be crucial to Aizen. Nnoitra is only seen from the back and he doesn’t utter a single word. Rather than seeing an interesting villain, readers only see a spoon-like figure.

9 Yhwach: He Is Shown Being Merciless Toward His Own Subordinates

Yhwach describes his power

After Ivan arrives in front of Yhwach to report to him, he gets into an argument with a Quincy. To stop the arguing, Yhwach blasts off the Quincy’s arm, telling them not to fight in front of him because he can’t stand fighting. He states that he wishes for peace with an ominous smile. While other character introductions grant readers a more in-depth view of a character, this introduction is solely meant to display how twisted he is, and how expendable his comrades are to him. It is easy for readers to dislike Yhwach from the start.

8 Bambietta Basterbine: She Is One Of The Quincy Who Invade Soul Society

Bambietta is excited to fight

Invading Soul Society is normally a difficult thing to do, but the Quincy effortlessly made their way in. When fighting, Bambietta displays a large amount of joy. She criticizes the Shinigami for having Sajin Komamura as a Captain, as he looks like a dog. After this exchange of words, Bambietta gleefully steals Komamura’s bankai. Through a few panels, Bambietta is established as a character who is confident and powerful, who follows Yhwach in order to get an opportunity to fight.

7 Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez: He Considers Ulquiorra’s Mercy To Be Weak

Grimmjow mocks Ulquiorra

After Ulquiorra and Yammy confront Ichigo for the first time, they are forced to retreat, given the arrival of Yoruichi and Urahara. Ulquiorra explains to Aizen that he decided not to kill Ichigo because he felt that he would not be a threat.

Grimmjow considers Ulquiorra to be weak for sparing Ichigo’s life, claiming that he could have defeated them all on his own. He grows angry when Aizen praises Ulquiorra’s decision, revealing early on that he is an arrogant character who prides strength above all else.

6 Gin Ichimaru: He Mocks Byakuya Kuchiki About His Little Sister’s Death Penalty

Gin smiles

Gin is a character whose appearance is enough to make people suspect him. His eyes are narrowed into slits that obscure his eyes from view, yet his mouth is almost always grinning widely. This, along with his slender build, gives him the appearance of a snake. He doesn’t hesitate to mock Byakuya, calling him a model Shinigami for not looking sad about his sister’s fate. He asks Byakuya if he is upset, and although he breaks up a fight between Byakuya and Kenpachi Zaraki, he snidely tells Byakuya to say hello to her for him.

5 Grand Fisher: It Is Revealed To Be Responsible For The Death Of Masaki Kurosaki

At first, it isn’t clear what is responsible for the death of Ichigo’s mother. When Rukia brings up the possibility that a hollow was responsible, Ichigo becomes angry since he believes that it was his fault. He hesitates when he sees the Grand Fisher’s lure, which takes the form of a little girl. It isn’t clear what this little girl is or if she is even real until Karin approaches her and nearly gets eaten as a result.

4 Shukuro Tsukishima: He Appears As A Mysterious Figure On Ichigo’s Roof

When Uryu Ishida is standing outside of Ichigo’s house, he notices Tsukishima standing on Ichigo’s roof. Immediately, he can tell that Tsukishima had spiritual powers, was a suspicious individual, and had some kind of purpose in being there. Uryu immediately gives chase, but through unseen events, he gets injured. It’s a nice fake-out since fans assumed that Tsukishima was responsible. However, it was someone else entirely, giving this arc a surprising twist.

3 Ulquiorra Cifer: His Appearance In The Human World Makes Everyone Panic

Ulquiorra looks down

When Ulquiorra appears in Karakura Town with Yammy Llargo, everyone who can sense their presence in both the human world and Soul Society immediately goes on high alert. Ulquiorra doesn’t lift a finger, allowing Yammy to do all the work.

2 Fishbone D: There Is A Buildup Leading To Its Appearance

Fishbone D's introduction

Fishbone D is one of the most memorable enemies who Ichigo has ever fought. It is the first hollow he ever defeated and is the reason why he grew close to Rukia and became a Shinigami. Ichigo sees his sister Karin and his father Isshin heavily wounded before he meets the creature responsible. When he finally approaches it, he is horrified to see a grotesque monster, who is holding his other sister, Yuzu, in its hand. It’s a frightening scene, especially since Ichigo is initially powerless.

1 Sosuke Aizen: He Hides His Intentions Very Well

Sosuke Aizen is introduced after Ichigo Kurosaki’s first attempt to get into Soul Society fails. He asks Renji Abarai to meet with him privately, and with a gentle disposition, voices his concerns about the severity of Rukia Kuchiki’s punishment. He asks Renji if the death penalty is a fair punishment for loaning her powers to Ichigo without authorization. He then plants the seed of doubt into Renji’s mind, stating that there may be some kind of conspiracy going on. Although he seems to be voicing his concerns, he is only spreading distrust amongst the Shinigami through very convincing acting.
