Following Star Trek Beyond‘s disappointing box office performance in 2016, Paramount has struggled to get a new installment in the Star Trek movie franchise off the ground. Recently, however, the studio recruited Star Trek: Discovery writer Kalinda Vazquez to pen the script for an original film set in the iconic sci-fi universe, with J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot producing. Abrams also directed Star Trek (2009) and its sequel, 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness, both of which are set in the same alternate quantum universe, AKA the Kelvin timeline, as Beyond.

Despite the continued hopes of cast members Chris Pine, Simon Pegg and Zachary Quinto, Paramount has yet to commit to making a fourth movie featuring the leads from 2009’s Star Trek and its sequels. Star Trek films developed by Noah Hawley and Quentin Tarantino have similarly stalled over the last few years, with both directors indicating they don’t expect to make them anytime soon, if ever, in their most recent updates. At Disney’s Investor Day in Dec. 2020, it was revealed that FX on Hulu is moving forward with Hawley’s Alien TV series, further suggesting his Star Trek movie has fallen by the wayside.

On the small screen, it’s a much different story. Paramount+ is home to both Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard, which are currently gearing up for their fourth and second seasons, respectively. The streaming platform also has Star Trek: Lower Decks, an animated comedy series that’s already been renewed for Season 3 ahead of its Season 2 premiere.

Elsewhere, the Discovery spinoff series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is actively filming on through to July and will launch on Paramount+. Finally, there’s Star Trek: Prodigy, an animated show in which Kate Muglrew will reprise her Star Trek: Voyager role as Kathryn Janeway. That series is also scheduled to begin streaming this year.

The untitled Star Trek film opens June 9, 2023.
