Emily VanCamp Points Out an Important Fact About Sharon and Captain America’s Kiss

Emily VanCamp revealed her thoughts on Sharon Carter’s kiss with Steve Rogers in Captain America: Civil War following her character’s return in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

In an interview with The Wrap, VanCamp discussed Sharon’s new status quo and even addressed whether or not her character’s kiss with Steve would be addressed in the new show. VanCamp confirmed that the show would not be addressing Steve much — which might disappoint fans — but did want to clarify an important detail about the kiss. “I think it’s important to point out, and I just literally thought about this talking about it all day, is he kissed her,” she said . “I don’t think I’ve ever said that. But that is important to note.”

Sharon Carter — the niece of Steve’s original love interest, Agent Peggy Carter — is a CIA agent and former agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. who was introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. She subsequently returned for Civil War, in which she played a more prominent role. Being Peggy’s niece naturally placed Sharon in Steve’s orbit as a potential love interest, and she proved to be a very helpful ally to Steve during the events of Civil War. It was during Sharon’s final scene with Steve that he kissed her as a way of thanking her for the support she provided. The two parted ways and Sharon went on the run.

In The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it is revealed what became of Sharon’s life following Civil War. No longer the idealistic agent with the strong moral compass everyone once knew, Sharon has been residing as a fugitive in the criminal city known as Madripoor, waiting for her long-overdue pardon. Her experiences in the post-Blip world have molded Sharon into a hardened, more cynical version of herself, having realized how much she sacrificed for Steve and his friends.

“She’s obviously been through it,” VanCamp explained. “She has been reluctantly thriving I would say in this new world as this fugitive in this lawless land and obviously has been waiting for her pardon, which hasn’t come.” VanCamp said it was sad to see her character in this state, but at the same time acknowledged there is strong story potential for Sharon moving forward. “That makes her really interesting. It’s very cool to see her independent of Cap, the shield, Peggy, all of that and sort of rogue on her own doing her thing.”

Directed by Kari Skogland, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Wyatt Russell, Noah Mills, Carl Lumbly and Daniel Brühl. New episodes debut on Fridays on Disney+.
