Ghostbusters: Afterlife Is More Like the Original Than the Sequel or Reboot

Bill Murray revealed that his upcoming film, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, is more like the first Ghostbusters film than any other film in its horror-comedy franchise so far.

“I remember [Director Jason Reitman] calling me and saying, ‘I’ve got an idea for another Ghostbusters. I’ve had this idea for years,'” Murray told Collider. “I thought, ‘What the heck could that possibly be?'” Murray remembered Jason, son of Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, being on the set of the first two Ghostbusters films. “I remember his Bar Mitzvah,” he said. “I was like, ‘What does this kid know?’ But, he had a really, really wonderful idea that he wrote with another wonderful guy that I got to work with, Gil Kenan (City of Ember).”

Murray further teased that Ghostbusters: Afterlife is “a Ghostbusters movie that really brings it back to life.” Murray added, “It really has the feel of the first one, more than the second one or the girls’ one. It has a different feel than two out of four.”

The official synopsis for Ghostbusters: Afterlife reads,

From director Jason Reitman and producer Ivan Reitman, comes the next chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe. In Ghostbusters: Afterlife, when a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind. The film is written by Jason Reitman & Gil Kenan.

In February, it was announced that the latest installment film in the Ghostbusters franchise will be rated PG-13 for “supernatural action and some suggestive references.” The rating is a step up from the PG rating attached to the first two Ghostbusters films, but the same as the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot, which featured “supernatural action and some crude humor.”

While the release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife was recently pushed again, Hasbro commemorated the upcoming film by dropping a new Ghostbuster’s Ecto-1 collectible in early March. The brand’s Ghostbusters Kenner Classics Ecto-1 is inspired by the vehicle in The Real Ghostbusters cartoon and features moving wheels, an opening tailgate and a roof-mounted swivel blaster seat, among other details. Hasbro also added figures of two fan-favorite ghosts from the cartoon, Bug-Eye and Fearsome Flusher.

Directed by Jason Reitman, Ghostbusters: Afterlife stars Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd and Mckenna Grace. The film arrives in theaters Nov. 11.
