Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece is a story about pirates who aim to find the treasure of the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, called the One Piece. Monkey D. Luffy, the protagonist of the story, begins his adventure from East Blue with the aim of finding Roger’s treasure.
As expected of a series with pirates and naval battles, there are quite a lot of deaths in the story. While some happen during the current timeline, others are shown to the fans via flashbacks, and most major One Piece arcs have some characters dying.
10 Syrup Village Arc, Arlong Park Arc, & Drum Island Arc – 1 Death Each
The least amount of deaths in a One Piece arc come from Syrup Village, Arlong Park, and Drum Island. The only known person to die in the Syrup Village arc is Usopp’s mother, Banchina.
Similarly, Nami and Nojiko’s mother, Bellemere, is the only person to have died in the Arlong Park arc while Dr. Hiriluk met his death in the Drum Island arc. What’s more, all these characters died in flashbacks.
9 Skypiea Arc & Fishman Island Arc – 2 Deaths Each
Skypiea and Fishman Island are quite similar to each other in a multitude of ways and are easily the most adventurous arcs in the series filled with lore about the Void Century. Interestingly, both these arcs have the same number of characters dying too, at least when it comes to the major known characters.
In Skypiea, fans saw Noland and Kalgara die, while in Fishman Island, Queen Otohime and Fisher Tiger met their end. Once again, all these characters died in flashbacks.
8 Enies Lobby Arc – 3 Major Characters Died In This Arc
Enies Lobby is one of the most popular One Piece arcs and quite easily the best Straw Hat-focused arc before the time-skip. The arc sees Luffy and his crew go to the Judiciary Island of Enies Lobby to rescue Nico Robin from the clutches of the World Government.
Although no major character dies in the present timeline of the arc, Nico Robin’s flashback shows the death of three major characters in Jaguar D. Saul, Professor Clover, and Nico Olvia.
7 Marineford Arc – Countless Characters Died In This Arc With 3 Major Deaths
The Marineford arc marks the biggest war in the One Piece world before the New Age of Piracy finally began. It saw the Whitebeard Pirates and his allies go head-to-head against the Marines and the Shichibukai to stop the execution of Portgas D. Ace.
Being a full-blown war, too many characters died in this arc but the biggest of them all was the death of Portgas D. Ace and Edward Newgate. Along with those two, Ace’s mother, Portgas D. Rouge was also revealed to have died in a flashback.
6 Punk Hazard Arc – 4 Major Characters Died In This Arc
Punk Hazard was the first island that the Straw Hat Pirates visited in the New World and it was one filled with a lot of misery. The arc’s main antagonist, Caesar Clown, used his scientific knowledge for the worse and is known to have killed lots of people in the disaster that took place four years before the current timeline.
Within the arc itself, Smiley, a Devil Fruit user, and Vegapunk’s Dragon Number 13 end up dying. Two members of the Donquixote Pirates in Vergo and Monet also meet their demise in this arc.
5 Romance Dawn Arc – 4 Characters Die In This Arc
Romance Dawn is the very first arc of One Piece that sees Luffy set out on his journey and recruit Zoro as well. A glimpse of Luffy’s past is also given to the fans, which shows two characters dying, including a bandit who is shot by Lucky Roux, and the bandit leader Higuma, who is eaten by the Lord of the Coast.
Gol D. Roger, the Pirate King’s execution is shown in this arc and finally, through Zoro’s flashback, fans get an idea of how Kuina died.
4 Alabasta Arc – 5 Characters End Up Dying In The Civil War
The Alabasta arc of One Piece introduces fans to one of the Shichibukai, Sir Crocodile, who is responsible for the civil war in the country of Alabasta. The entire country of Alabasta is at each other’s throats in the arc and after Crocodile’s scheme is revealed to the fans, the royal family is seen taking up arms against him.
The Tsumegeri Guards of King Kobra end up dying after consuming the holy water, and from the Baroque Works, the death of Mr. 11 is confirmed.
3 Whole Cake Island – 7 Characters Perish In This Arc
Whole Cake Island sees the Strawhat Pirates go up against the Yonko of the Sea, Charlotte Linlin, and her family. The goal of the crew, however, is not to fight the Yonko but to retrieve Sanji and steal her Poneglyphs.
Despite that, seven characters fall in this arc, including those in flashbacks and they include the likes of organ dealer Jigra, who died at the Tea Party, Kingbaum, who helped the crew escape, and Pedro, who sacrificed himself for the sake of the Strawhats. Those who died in flashbacks include Vinsmoke Sora, Jorul, Mother Carmel, and Zepo.
2 Dressrosa Arc – 8 Characters Die In This Arc
To take care of the SAD factory in Dressrosa, the Straw Hats arrive at this island, only to see it filled with misery. As expected of Luffy, he decides to take matters into his own hands and with Law’s help, fights Doflamingo.
No character dies in the main timeline in this arc and all the deaths from flashbacks include Diez Barrels, Donquixote Homing, Donquixote Rosinante, Lami, Scarlett, Russian, and her son Gimlet.
1 Wano Country Arc (Ongoing) – 8 Characters Have Died In The Arc So Far
The Wano Country arc sees the Straw Hat and their allies go to war against Yonko Kaido and Big Mom at Wano Country. Being the greatest war so far in the New Age of Piracy, this arc sees many characters die both in the current timeline and in flashbacks.
In Oden’s flashback, Higurashi, Semimaru, Oden, Toki, and Hyogoro’s wife end up dying while in the current timeline fans get to hear about the death of Absalom, and witness Shimotsuki Yasuie is seen in the second act of the arc. The death of the legendary Rocks D. Xebec is also made known in this arc.
