Everybody loves plot twists, especially when they’re done well. Right from the most unexpected character being the traitor, or the sweet and naïve girl who ended up being the murderer – twists like these keep anime fans on the edge of their seats, and expectedly so.
Sometimes, bad characters end up being the good guys because of certain justifiable reasons behind their terrible actions. However, more often than not, it is the good characters who end up doing the most horrific of deeds, that end up being permanently etched in the minds of anime fans.
10 Albert: Raised & Lied To The Child Of A Couple He Murdered (Tiger & Bunny)
On the surface, Albert was the ideal father figure for Barnaby, almost like a savior for him, even helping him become a very rich and successful superhero.
However, later episodes of the anime showed that this was all an act. Not only was Albert a highly selfish, manipulative, and cunning man, but he was also the one responsible for the death of Barnaby’s parents. He also altered Barnaby’s memories in order to remove any evidence of him being a suspect in the crime he committed.
9 Metphies: A Religious Zealot Who Brainwashed A Young Man Into Creating A Rebellion (The Godzilla Series)
This Exif priest pretended to be Haruo’s one and only confidante, but the truth was that he was actually grooming the young man to become an anarchist. He sowed seeds of doubt and rebellion in the boy’s minds, due to which his spaceship was forced to go back to the barren planet earth and fight Godzilla – something that nobody wanted, nor were prepared for.
His only object of devotion was his God Ghidorah, who brought about destruction to any planet he manifested on, which was also something this alien wanted to happen with the planet earth and the last remains of humanity.
8 James: Conned A Rich Woman & Made Her Believe He Truly Loved Her (Great Pretender)
This shrewd and money-minded man was actually a good enough actor who managed to fool the CEO of a prominent company, Farrah Brown, into believing he loved her. He then used her money to buy expensive paintings, which he then added all to his private collection.
He showed no remorse for his actions, and even when he was exposed to be the con man that he was, he tried his best to keep manipulating Farrah until the very end.
7 Enikoda: Fooled His Enemies Into Believing He Was On Their Side (Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens)
For this hacker, money was above everything. He’d do whatever needed to be done, so long as he was getting paid for it. Of course, his friendly personality and nature ensured his clients were easily charmed by him and hired him instantly.
However, he proved his loyalty to his friend Banba when he warned him in advance of an assassination attempt on him by his own clients. Enikoda took the money from his clients, gave them Banba’s information, fooled them into trusting him and eventually, turned the tables on them.
6 Miroku: Faked Concern For The Spirit World Warriors (Beyond The Boundary)
Manipulating adults is one thing, but Miroku was someone who went so low as to manipulate children like Mitsuki when they were at their lowest.
His disarming smile and his optimistic personality were what he’d use as his weapons to get whatever information he wanted from people. He was excellent at hiding his true emotions and intentions, which included wanting to turn as many humans into shadow beings as possible.
5 Undertaker: His Mysterious Past Was Why He Remained Close To The Phantomhive Family (Black Butler)
This eccentric man’s past is shrouded in mystery, but several flashbacks showed fans how close he was to the Phantomhive household, often helping them on their missions for the Queen.
However, he turns out to be the true antagonist of the series, something that was revealed in the Book of Atlantic, where fans witnessed how he was the one behind the reanimation of the dead corpses known as Bizarre Dolls, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of innocent lives.
4 Nobimaru: Polite On The Outside, This Kitsune Is Actually Quite A Sadist (Kemono Jihen)
This kitsune, with the appearance of a 13-year-old boy, possessed a demeanor and talent for acting which were good enough to fool even the mighty Inari, who believed he was her loyal servant when in reality he despised her and had absolutely no respect for her.
Throughout the anime series, he is able to hide his sadistic and scheming nature very well, so much so that nobody was aware of his true personality. While the first season does not delve into detail about his hidden agenda, it makes it amply clear that this young creature is not someone who can be taken at face value.
3 Minatsuki: Tricked Ganta Into Letting His Guard Down So That She Could Kill Him (Deadman Wonderland)
Minatsuki was easily able to trick the naïve Ganta into believing that she was a shy and innocent young girl, someone who was romantically interested in him. The truth was that this was all a ruse just so that she could catch him off-guard in the fighting arena, in a match where she hoped to kill him in exchange for her survival.
In fact, not only was she shown to be a sadistic psychopath, but she also reveled in unnecessarily humiliating Ganta, and even her brother Yo, in front of an entire audience for absolutely no reason.
2 Muzan: This Mass Murderer Kept Up An Excellent Façade Of Being An Outstanding Member Of Society (Demon Slayer)
Right from the get-go, fans are told that Muzan is possibly the worst creature to ever walk the earth since it was because of him that thousands of innocent humans had died or turned into blood-thirsty demons.
However, the reality was far from different, as was evidenced by Tanjiro’s shock upon learning that not only was Muzan a respectable member of society, he also had a loving wife who had given birth to his child. So, essentially, nobody outside of demons and demon slayers knew the truth about Muzan.

1 Frill: Was Easily Able To Hide Her Corrupted Nature From Her Creators (Wonder Egg Priority)
Frill is created to emulate a regular 14-year-old girl, but things soon start going awry. While she maintained the façade of being an endearing teenage girl, beneath the surface she harbored feelings of intense jealousy and hatred towards Acca’s new family.
As a result, she ended up killing Acca’s wife and daughter, before she was finally locked away and destroyed by him. Despite that, she is still shown to somehow be responsible for the suicides of a yet uncertain number of young girls.
