Disney’s newest trailer for the upcoming animated series Star Wars: The Bad Batch offers plenty of new details about the series’ premise, as the members of Clone Force 99 find themselves on the run from the new Galactic Empire. Luckily, the titular team will meet familiar faces to help them along the way. Indeed, the trailer shows that the Bad Batch will cross paths with The Mandalorian‘s Fennec Shand and Captain Rex. And, on top of that, the trailer also reveals that a fan-favorite Rebel fighter will also return in the animated series to assist the superpowered clones: Saw Gerrera.
Saw Gerrera first appeared in the fifth season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars in 2012. The character was introduced as a freedom fighter on the planet Onderon who took on the Separatist forces. He and his people were trained to fend for themselves by Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka Tano. The storyline established Saw as the first in a movement that would eventually become the Rebellion. While Saw was a young man in his first appearance in The Clone Wars, he later returned as a Rebel fighter and seasoned veteran in Star Wars Rebels, the Jedi: Fallen Order video game and in the live-action anthology film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

In Rebels and Rogue One, Saw Gerrera earned a reputation as a Rebel extremist, a dangerous freedom fighter who put his mission to defeat the Empire above anything else. Now, Star Wars: The Bad Batch is set to bring back the character in an era where he is not yet the character who returned in Star Wars Rebels.
The trailer for Star Wars: The Bad Batch briefly shows Clone Force 99 interacting with Saw and his followers. While we don’t yet know how the character will become involved in the series, it does appear as if he will play a crucial role in helping Hunter, Wrecker, Crosshair, Tech and Echo find their place in a galaxy now controlled by the Empire.
Saw’s brief appearance in The Bad Batch trailer shows that he is now even more of leader than he was when we last saw him in The Clone Wars. His return will also likely work to inform the character, by showing how he has changed to become the revered but dangerous Rebel figure we met in Rogue One. Plus, in The Bad Batch, now that the Empire has recently been established following the fall of the Jedi Order, Saw already appears to be fighting back. This indicates that, through his appearance on the animated series, we will perhaps see the very birth of the Rebellion.
Created by Dave Filoni, Star Wars: The Bad Batch stars Dee Bradley Baker and Ming-Na Wen. The series premieres May 4 on Disney+.
