Magic: The Gathering Artist Suspended for Plagiarism | CBR

Magic: The Gathering has suspended one of its artists due to plagiarism.

Twitter user @omgscarypet was alerted by a fan on DeviantArt that one of their drawings was featured on a card named “Crux of Fate,” which appears in the upcoming Strixhaven: School of Mages set. The image that appears on the card does not feature the DeviantArt watermark but otherwise matches the original drawing.

“It has come to our attention that the card Crux of Fate from the Strixhaven: School of Mages Mystical Archive may overtly feature Magic: The Gathering fan art and the contracted artist did not receive permission for this incorporation,” Wizards of the Coast said in a statement. “These actions do not reflect the values of Wizards, and, as a result, we will be suspending future work with Jason Felix until we have been able to bring this matter to successful conclusion.”

The Strixhaven: School of Mages set takes place on the plane of Arcavios, which has colleges that specialize in teaching the ways of magic. The set will have a digital release for MTG Arena and Magic Online on April 15 and a physical release on April 23.
