Logan’s sarcastic yet sweet personality was obvious from the moment he started a relationship with Rory on Gilmore Girls. One of the best examples of this comes from the fact that he began to call her “Ace” quickly after they met. Here’s how that nickname came about on the CW show.
Rory met Logan while they were both attending Yale and working for the school newspaper. He was specifically introduced in Gilmore Girls Season 5 Episode 3, “Written In The Stars.” The pair was brought together when Rory decided to do a story on the Life and Death Brigade, a secret society he was a part of. Initially, Rory was turned off by Logan’s personality, as he seemed like the typical rich playboy, but they continued getting to know one another even after Rory finished her story. In spite of their differences, Rory fell for him and the feeling was mutual for Logan — in fact, the show implies that he might’ve fallen for Rory first. The fact that Logan calls Rory “Ace” is strong evidence for this idea.

Logan first used the nickname three episodes later in “Norman Miller, I’m Pregnant!” On the surface, it was a reference to Rory’s skill and aspiration to become a professional journalist, or an “ace reporter.” But using the nickname didn’t stop there. From that point on, Rory and Logan dated for the vast majority of Gilmore Girls and Logan continued referring to her as Ace throughout all of it. The nickname became more than just a reference to Rory’s goal. For Logan, it was an affectionate term of endearment.
On the surface, Logan seems snarky and full of himself, exuding confidence and charm. Since he came from money, he was used to getting whatever he wanted and he also tended to get away with reckless behavior. Conversely, Rory is careful and calculated and has had to work for everything she has. In short, they are complete opposites. Those opposing characteristics initially irked Rory, and Logan was able to pick up on this right off the bat. Calling her “Ace” was his way of gently ribbing Rory for her serious demeanor and the way she held her work as a student journalist to the utmost importance. As someone who was completely carefree, Logan found humor in this.
But as Gilmore Girls went on, Logan began to show his sweeter and more vulnerable side to Rory. His father treated him more like business investment than a son, and Logan’s sole purpose was being groomed to take over his father’s business one day. Because of this, he felt trapped in that life. Once he and Rory fell for each other and began dating, the fact that Logan continued to use that nickname showed that underneath his layers of sarcasm, he did have a heart. So while calling Rory “Ace” began as a method to tease her, it became a sweet term of endearment that showed just how much he cared about her.
