Raya and the Last Dragon Honest Trailer Leans Into Avatar Comparisons

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Raya and the Last Dragon, now playing in theaters and on Disney+.

Raya and the Last Dragon has received the Honest Trailers treatment, with many jokes made comparing the Disney film to Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The ScreenJunkies video opens with a rewrite of Avatar‘s opening narration, adjusted to fit Raya‘s plot: “Fang, Heart, Spine, Talon and Tail. Long ago, the five lands lived together in harmony. Then everything changed when the Druun Nation attacked. Only the dragons could stop them, but when the world needed them most, they vanished. 500 years passed and Raya discovered the last dragon, a water dragon named Sisu, and although her magic skills are great, she has a long to learn before she’s ready to save anyone, but Raya believes Sisu can save the world.” It goes on to call the movie “Rayatar: The Last Airdragon,” before adjusting to provide the correct title.

The trailer describes Raya and the Last Dragon as “reincarnated from another franchise” while comparing visuals of Raya rolling on Tuck-Tuck and Aang rolling on an airball. The cast roll call at the end also calls Namaari “Zuko,” as both characters are royalty from imperialist nations who start off as antagonists but eventually end up helping the heroes.

The trailer makes fun of other aspects of Raya and the Last Dragon, including the voice casting, use of 2010s slang and how the events of the movie often contradict its intended morals about trust. However, it praises the animation and worldbuilding, noting that a full miniseries might have better developed these qualities.

Many viewers have previously drawn comparisons between Raya and the Last Dragon and Avatar, both when Raya and the Last Dragon‘s trailer was released and when the movie debuted in theaters and on Disney+. This includes an outfit worn by Raya that looks surprisingly similar to Sokka’s Water Tribe look from ATLA Season 2, along with the fact that both the film and the show have animal hybrids in their respective universes.

Directed by Don Hall and Carlos López Estrada from a script by Paul Briggs and John Ripa, Raya and the Last Dragon stars Kelly Marie Tran, Awkwafina, Gemma Chan, Daniel Dae Kim, Sandra Oh, Benedict Wong, Izaac Wang, Thalia Tran, Alan Tudyk, Lucille Soong, Patti Harrison and Ross Butler.
