WandaVision gave us nine incredibly entertaining episodes full of plot twists and crazy easter eggs kicking off the MCU’s Disney+ world to a great start. Fans were able to watch Wanda as she struggled to cope with the loss of Vision and create her very own reality, the Hex. Although Wanda and Vision were quite obviously the headliners of the show, Marvel managed to give us plenty of pretty amazing supporting characters.
Possibly the best and most intriguing side character was the grown-up Monica Rambeau, played by the brilliant Teyonah Parris. We watched her as she came back from the blip, investigated the Westview anomalies, gained superpowers, and helped fight off a witch, yeah she had a pretty big storyline, but with her limited screentime, there are plenty of questions we still want to ask.
10 Is She Still In Touch With Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel?
Fans first met Monica Rambeau when she was a lot younger all the way back in 2019 with Captain Marvel. Monica was the daughter of one of Carol’s friends, if not her best friend, and fellow pilot, Maria Rambeau. Monica didn’t have a huge role in that film, but she still had a direct impact on the film and on Captain Marvel (she even re-designed her suit to the classic red, blue and gold colors).
But, given Maria and Carol were such good friends, it would be weird if Carol didn’t keep in touch with both her and her daughter Monica, especially after the blip when Monica came back to life to find out her mother had sadly passed three years ago. The show makes no mention of Carol, so we can only guess that they did come in contact.
9 Has Monica Been Working With Skrulls Her Whole Life?
In Captain Marvel, the younger version of Monica from the 90s was introduced to Skrulls when Nick Fury brought them back for dinner at Maria’s house and the Skrulls turned out to be friendly refugees trying to find a safe home and not fight a war. Skrulls have since popped up in Spider-Man: Far From Home, impersonating Nick Fury and Maria Hill, and then once again in the WandaVision mid-credits scene.
In the mid-credits scene, Monica is approached by an agent who turns out to be a Skrull. Monica seems so calm and relaxed about this indicating that maybe she’s been working with Skrulls and S.W.O.R.D for some time now. We know she was aware of their existence, but to be so calm at the reveal suggests she’s pretty comfortable around them.
8 Was Nick Fury The Old Friend That Was Looking For Her In The Mid-Credits Scene?
Back to that crazy mid-credits scene, where the Skrull approaches Monica, it is revealed that an old friend of her mothers would like to meet with Monica, before pointing upwards, so who could that old friend be? Well, most likely the person mentioned is none other than Nick Fury. We know the two have met before, and we know Nick Fury is currently chilling in a floating spaceship but he also probably has intel on Monica’s location and current tasks from within S.W.O.R.D.
Furthermore, in Captain Marvel, we can recall Nick Fury telling a young Monica that one day she can join Auntie Carol in space when she can glow just like her, and what just happened in WandaVision? Monica could glow. And now, in typical Nick Fury fashion, he’s recruiting another superhero.
7 Which Comic Book Superhero Alias Is She Taking?
In the comic books, Monica Rambeau has had many different superhero names, like Photon, Pulsar, and Spectrum to name a few, over the years and has even taken over the mantle of Captain Marvel at some points, but WandaVision didn’t make it clear which one she took or what her powers could really do.
In the comics, her powers give her the ability to transform to any kind of energy from the electromagnetic spectrum and control this energy. So far her powers haven’t been explored an awful lot, but we definitely know she was able to see the energy emitted from the power lines and could glow. Her name hasn’t been confirmed, but given that her mother Maria’s nickname was Photon, it seems the most likely.
6 We Know She Got Powers, But How Did She Get Them?
WandaVision raised a lot of questions for the future of the MCU, and it answered some of them, but plenty was left up in the air, one of them being how and why Monica got powers. We know she traveled through the Hex’s wall on three occasions, and as Darcy said her body was altered after going through the barrier twice, leaving her medical scans blank.
But does that mean that all of the S.W.O.R.D agents who went through the Hex also had their molecules altered? Could Darcy now have powers? Perhaps it is purely down to the fact that Monica went through the energy field on three occasions, but something still needs a little bit more of an explanation.
5 Would She Have Been Head Of S.W.O.R.D And Why Does Hayward Not Trust Her?
Monica’s mother was a pretty revolutionary mother. She was originally a United States Air Force pilot and then went on to become the founder of S.W.O.R.D, all while taking care of Monica as a single mother. In episode 4, when Monica is blipped back to life, and after a chaotic and pretty sad scene where she finds out her mother passed, Monica meets with Hayward back at S.W.O.R.D headquarters.
It’s pretty clear that neither of them trusts the other, and it’s also inferred that Hayward wouldn’t have been given the role of director of S.W.O.R.D if Monica was around after her mother’s death. So does this mean Monica would have been director of S.W.O.R.D, and if this was the case, would Monica not get that role back after the blip?
4 What Do Her Powers Mean For The Future Of The MCU?
Monica’s future was left completely in the air by the end of WandaVision. Fans can expect to see her pop up again in Captain Marvel 2, but the mid-credits scene seemed to point towards a role for her in the upcoming Disney+ series Secret Invasion, which will be all about Nick Fury and the Skrulls.
It’s unclear what her powers are capable of, but in the comics, Monica is incredibly powerful, enough so to take over from Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel, so are we getting another crazy powerful hero in the MCU? Perhaps, but Marvel didn’t exactly make it clear about her future role in the universe.
3 Why Was Monica Able To Break Free From Wanda’s Spell?
When Monica first went into the Hex and entered the alternate 1950s sitcom reality, while under her new alias Geraldine, she was completely controlled by Wanda and had no idea what was going on or how she could do anything herself. But then in episode 3, things get a bit weird. After Wanda gives birth to twins and Monica helps her out, Monica was sent flying out of the Hex in a massive twist after bringing up Pietro’s name a few too many times.
This shocking moment was one of the turning points of the series, but still leaves us fans wondering how Monica was able to break free of Wanda’s mind-control and mention Pietro. One fan theory suggests that both the characters are related through grief and that helped Monica reach through to Wanda.
2 Who Was Her Aerospace Engineer Friend?
Marvel is particularly good at giving us little clues and hints to future projects and storylines in the huge interconnected universe, and fans are even better at jumping on these clues and coming up with the craziest of fan theories, so when Monica mentioned an aerospace engineer friend, everyone went crazy.
People thought it could have been Rhodey or Riri Williams from the upcoming Ironheart series, or maybe even an epic Reed Richards cameo, but fans were ultimately left in disappointment when it turned out to be an unknown and completely made-up character called Major Goodner. Maybe hoping for Mr. Fantastic was a stretch, but it still doesn’t make sense that the writers would tease a big cameo for a pretty disappointing one at that.
1 Why Was Monica Able To See And Feel The Presence Of The Hex When Others Couldn’t?
In episode 4, fans are introduced to the awesome trio of Monica Rambeau, Darcy Lewis, and Jimmy Woo, but as we meet them, and they encounter Westview for the first time, something very odd happens. While the trio and all the S.W.O.R.D agents can see and feel the presence of the Hex, the residents of Eastview can’t, and in fact, they don’t have any recollection of the town existing.
So what makes Monica and co so special that they can see the Hex when nobody else could? We have no idea, but it is certainly one of the biggest mysteries of the show that went unnoticed.
