A new Kickstarter campaign organized by Southern California native Jeremy Guerra, founder of the Cats and Comics Foundation, aims to create a “lounging space where you can read comics and play board games all while socializing with our feline friends.”
Guerra and Cats and Comics co-founder Marcie are currently raising money for a cat café centered around comic books and tabletop games, with the intention being to give shelter cats more social interaction — something they often lack, leading to lower adoption rates as compared to dogs. “Cats in shelters are lacking the required human interaction in order to feel comfortable around them and this is yet another reason why finding homes for them becomes a challenge,” the campaign text explains. “Our mission is to end the killing of shelter cats by socializing them and increasing adoptions.”

Cats and Comics describes the project as a “cat café for nerds,” and is currently looking to raise $10,000 USD. A breakdown of the budget explains that 15% of the raised money will be dedicated to startup fees, with another 15% going to retail space, 35% going to construction costs, 10% going to business expenses, 10% going to supplies and 15% going to merchandise.
At the time of writing, the campaign has raised $1,472 (just under 15% of its initial $10,000 goal) from 19 backers. The campaign is live for the next 41 days, and those interested in donating will be able to do so between now and Thursday, May 6 at 5:07 p.m. EST.
