Legendary Comics has released a motion trailer for its newest graphic novel, Championess.
From Legendary Comics editor Nikita Kannekanti, written by duo Tarun Shanker and Kelly Zekas and drawn by Amanda Perez Puentes, Championess is based on the true story of female bare-knuckle boxer Elizabeth Wilkinson. The graphic novel follows Wilkinson as she, according to the press release, “confronts her personal demons of what destroyed her family and comes to terms with being the first half-Indian female boxer in a white male world.”
Historically, Wilkinson is considered the first female boxer. Shanker, Zekas and Puentes have painted a gritty portrait of 18th-century London as Wilkinson, reimagined as half-Indian, trains as a bare-knuckle boxer to support herself and her sister. The graphic novel will be available for purchase in-store and online April 13. It is currently available for pre-order.
It was announced Nov. 2020 that the Championess graphic novel would be adapted into a television series by UK-based production company Watford & Essex under showrunners Emma Frost and Matthew Graham (Life On Mars, Ashes to Ashes, The White Queen, The Spanish Princess, Doctor Who and The Man In The High Castle). No further details have been revealed, other than the show will, like the graphic novel, take place in the brutal, male-dominated world of boxing.
Legendary Comics has a full slate of releases for 2021, including The Science of Ghosts by Lilah Sturges (June 1), Head Wounds: Sparrow by Oscar Isaac, Bob Johnson and John Alvey (July 1), The Heart Hunter by McKelle George (Aug. 1) and Lupina: Volume 1 by James Wright (Sept. 9).
