Comic book writer Frank Miller showed support for his Asian followers this week, following the rise in violence against Asian people in recent months.
Miller posted an image on his Instagram account, showing a drawing of an Asian warrior wielding two swords. The drawing also features the written text, “Stop Asian Hate.”
While Miller didn’t include a caption on the image, his post is the latest in a series of statements released by prominent figures in the entertainment industry as a show of support for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI).
Following a series of violent attacks against the AAPI community, DC Comics posted a statement condemning anti-Asian racism. In a post shared across its social media accounts, DC said, “We’re joining our WarnerMedia family to stand with the AAPI community in condemning the recent rise in anti-Asian hate crimes, as well as all racist acts. For more resources, visit Stop AAPI Hate.”
Simu Liu, star of Marvel Studios’ upcoming Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings film, recently penned an op-ed sharing his thoughts on anti-Asian racism. “I worry a lot about my parents these days,” Liu began the essay. “… According to Stop AAPI Hate, a website that tracks the violence against Asian Americans, there were over 2,800 reported cases of racism and discrimination between March 19 and Dec. 31 of last year.”
Liu, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Chloe Bennet, were among several Marvel-affiliated actors who released statements following the murder of six Asian women in Atlanta, Georgia, on March 16. After news of the tragedy broke, Liu tweeted, “Feeling overwhelming grief at the senseless murder of 8 people in Atlanta. Still much we don’t know, but it’s clear to me that the shooter specifically targeted Asian women.”
Bennet added, “I’m actually so upset I don’t have much to say because, of course, this happens. How could we expect anything else considering the racist rhetoric that has been enabled and fucking celebrated over the past year.”
Miller is best known as the writer of several acclaimed comics including Daredevil: Born Again, The Dark Knight Returns, Sin City and 300. Miller recently teamed up with Klaus Janson to provide a new drawing featuring Daredevil and Elektra for the Hero Initiative and BINC Foundation Double Vision auction. Proceeds from the auction benefited the Comicbook United Fund — supporting local comic shops during the COVID-19 pandemic.
