Legacies: MG’s Shocking Secret Is Revealed | CBR

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Legacies Season 3, Episode 7, “Yup, It’s a Leprechaun, All Right,” which aired Thursday on The CW.

MG has been on something of a journey of self discovery lately. He got together with Alyssa after she helped bring the Necromancer down, only to split with her after she cheated on him with Jed. Now, following Kaleb’s suggestion that he try to be less of a people pleaser, MG has been saying no to the requests of others in order to put his own wants and needs first. In the latest episode of the series, “Yup, It’s a Leprechaun, All Right,” however, it’s revealed that MG has been keeping a shocking secret for weeks that shows he was willing to do at least one thing others wouldn’t like even before his break up with Alyssa.

In the episode, “Hold on Tight,” Lizzie realized she can use an ongoing celestial event to create a prison world for the Necromancer and all the problems he’s caused, so she makes an ascendant to get the job done. Each prison world has a corresponding ascendant that not only creates it but lets people travel to it. Lizzie, Josie and Alyssa use the new ascendant to create the prison world and then they give the ascendant to Alyssa, who in turn, gives it to MG. In the episode, “This Is What It Takes,” though, Lizzie mentions Alyssa destroyed the ascendant, cutting off any possibility of anyone being able to travel to the prison world again, a serious problem given that Hope, Lizzie and Alaric suspect Landon may be trapped there after he dissolved into black goo in the real world.

MG spends the latest episode worried because a spell Alyssa created for him of an action figure is fading. But he soon reveals in a conversation with Alyssa that it’s not the fake action figure he’s worried about, it’s what it was cloaking. It turns out Alyssa never really destroyed the ascendant. In fact, MG has had it the whole time and had been keeping it in a box that was hidden by the action figure. Now, though, not only is the box uncloaked, what was in it is missing and MG’s panicked.

By the end of the episode MG comes clean to Lizzie that he’s been hiding the intact ascendant this whole time, only to discover that Hope had found the missing magical object and is shocked and hurt that MG kept its existence from her when it could have helped her find her boyfriend.

While MG has been trying to be less of a people pleaser recently, nothing he’s done in the last few episodes compares to this betrayal. The question is: why did he lie about what happened to the ascendant when he knew it could potentially help the gang save Landon? Malivore and his monsters may be scary but this seems like a surprisingly selfish move on MG’s part. Needless to say, this revelation is bound to put him on the outs with Hope and a number of his other friends.

On the other hand, discovering the ascendant now means — given the celestial event in Mystic Falls never seems to end for some reason — Hope is likely to use it to resume the search for Landon. After last week’s episode established Landon is indeed trapped in the prison world, Hope could finally be on her way to bringing him back.

Legacies stars Danielle Rose Russell, Jenny Boyd, Kaylee Bryant, Quincy Fouse, Aria Shahghasemi, Peyton Alex Smith, Matt Davis, Chris Lee, Ben Levin and Leo Howard. New episodes air Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
