WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Wynonna Earp Season 4, Episode 9, “Crazy,” which aired Friday on Syfy.
Purgatory sees a shakeup in its power players as Wynonna Earp nears its finale, with both Doc Holliday and Nicole Haught taking on new responsibilities. And though Wynonna Earp may not be as reckless and self-destructive as she had been at the midseason premiere, the gunslinger still has to confront how far she would be willing to go to grant her darkest wishes when a new demon starts stacking up a body count throughout town.
While Wynonna and Nicole engage in a friendly sparring match, the Earp sisters try to convince Nicole to become Purgatory’s new sheriff, with Nicole firmly turning down the offer and goes to Shorty’s to drink away her feelings. Owner Randy Nedley informs Nicole that his assistant Rachel freed her invisible boyfriend Billy Clanton while everyone was preoccupied with the enchanted confetti from Waverly’s bachelorette party. As Jeremy Chetri informs the Earps that an apparent vampire is on the hunt in Purgatory, Wynonna seizes this as an opportunity to speak with Doc.

With Doc having usurped the demon Amon as the new proprietor of The Glory Hole, Wynonna easily tracks Doc down to the nightclub, still populated by Amon’s former minions. Doc rebuffs Wynonna’s offer to rekindle their romance before she reveals that an apparent vampire has been preying on the residents of Purgatory, but Doc denies knowing who is responsible. As Jeremy examines the body of a second victim, he and Waverly note that the wounds are too far apart to be caused by a vampire before realizing that the victims have had their brains removed and are both local bar trivia champions.
As Wynonna and Waverly confront the suspect, Doug Werner, they realize he has been eating his victims’ brains to increase his intelligence, though he is too obtuse to notice that this murderous diet has had no effect. The sisters discover the true culprit is actually Doug’s girlfriend Jeannie, a genie that brought Doug brains to fulfill his wish of becoming the smartest man in Purgatory. While Jeannie is jailed, Doug remains on the loose and Wynonna and Jeremy decide to win the next trivia night to lure the killer out where they compete against secret trivia enthusiast Doc.
Doug moves to the police station to free Jeannie and decides to feast on Wynonna’s brain, using his wishes to restrain the gunslinger. Jeremy triumphs at trivia night but not before Rachel reveals that Nicole avoids taking the position of sheriff after previously reacting poorly and heavily intoxicated when she was outvoted by the Clantons. Doc arrives at the police station in time to rescue Wynonna from Doug as he succumbs to the side effects of eating raw human brains, dying as Jeannie watches on.
In the aftermath, Doc consoles Nicole in moving beyond her prior embarrassing display to claim the position of sheriff for herself while Nedley gives her his seal of approval. However, the ending is far less happy for Wynonna who confronts Jeannie and decides to end her for being far too dangerous to be left on the loose, especially after manipulating Doug and killing for him. While Jeannie offers to grant Wynonna her greatest wishes, including winning back Doc’s love and preparing for an unknown impending threat, the gunslinger executes her freeing Purgatory of another demon while Wynonna continues to stubbornly face the future alone.
Produced by SEVEN24 Films and IDW Entertainment, Wynonna Earp stars Melanie Scrofano as the title character, Dominique Provost-Chalkley as Waverly, Katherine Barrell as Nicole Haught and Tim Rozon as Doc Holliday. New episodes of Wynonna Earp Season 4 air Fridays on Syfy.
