WandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer was concerned a key scene from Marvel’s Disney+ series — Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision’s (Paul Bettany) goodbye to one another — wouldn’t make it to the screen in its original form.
“The thing that still moves me and I kind of can’t get over it is their [Wanda and Vision’s] goodbye scene,” Schaeffer told The Daily Princetonian. “It was written very early. The kernel of it was part of my original pitch. I wasn’t sure if it would survive the development of the series. But Vision talking about all the things he’s been and the idea of “what will he be next?,” that was a really early idea. I really love Paul Bettany as a person, and he loved that piece, too, so it’s very beautiful to me. That scene is totally the heart of the show.”

In their final moments together on WandaVision, as the Hex around Westview is collapsing, Vision asks Wanda, “But before I go, I feel I must know: what am I?,” to which Wanda responds, “You, Vision, are the piece of the Mind Stone that lives in me. You are a body of wires and blood and bone that I created. You are my sadness and my hope. But mostly you’re my love.” The pair then kiss one final time before Vision, who surprises himself and Wanda by being able to cry, tells Wanda, “I have been a voice with no body, a body but not human and now… a memory… made real. Who knows what I might be next?” With the Hex closing in fast on them, he then adds, “We have said goodbye before, so it stands to reason,” before allowing Wanda to finish the thought: “We’ll say hello again.”
Vision and Wanda’s parting exchange is among the more emotional moments on WandaVision, along with the scene in which Vision says one of the show’s most quoted lines: “What is grief, if not love persevering?” Schaeffer credits Olsen, Bettany and writer Laura Donney for their combined efforts in coming up with Vision’s profound observation of grief — a line that, much like Wanda and Vision’s farewell, Schaeffer said acts as a “distillation” of the series’ overarching story and themes.
Written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shakman, WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Kathryn Hahn as Agnes. The series is available to stream on Disney+.
