My Hero Academia: 10 Times Bakugo Was A Terrible Rival | CBR

Katsuki Bakugo sees two students in My Hero Academia as his rivals: Shoto Todoroki And Izuku Midoriya. As a rival, he is fiercely competing with them to become the top student in their class as well as the next number one hero and is constantly trying to prove that he is superior to them in every way.

This rivalry is what leads to them eventually deciding to intern for Endeavor together. Although Katsuki has proven himself to be a worthy and engaging rival, there were times in which he didn’t bother competing with them, or when he was too arrogant to think that competing with them was necessary.

10 Deku Was Originally Just A Follower Of Katsuki

When Katsuki first discovered his quirk, he was quick to realize just how powerful it was. He immediately became prideful, and people flocked to him in admiration. Although Deku called himself Katsuki’s friend, Katsuki saw Deku as more of a follower. Like all of his followers, Deku was expected to lavish him with praise and adoration. However, when Deku tried to help him when he fell down, Katsuki felt that Deku was overstepping his bounds as a follower and making him look weak.

9 He Bullied Deku

Despite Deku’s good intentions when he tried to help Katsuki up, Katsuki started to bully him. He would call him all sorts of names and try his hardest to crush any dreams Deku had of becoming a professional hero.

He would make threats that would make Deku shrink back. He would also enjoy the power he had over him and everyone in the class since he felt that no one there was worthy of competing with him.

8 He Hated Being Saved By Someone He Thought Was Weaker Than Him

Katsuki attacked by the sludge villain

Katsuki hated the way that Deku was always there to offer him help. Being helped by someone beneath him was considered one of the biggest insults to him. He even told Deku off for trying to save him from the Sludge Villain. Katsuki felt that if he wasn’t strong enough to defeat a villain, there would be no way for Deku to be able to. This was also the case when he was kidnapped by the League of Villains, and he was quick to tell Deku to stay away. When rescuing Katsuki, Deku quickly realized that if he was the one to reach out for him, Katsuki would refuse to be saved.

7 He Tried To Attack Deku Because He Couldn’t Believe He Was Strong

After obtaining his quirk and entering U.A., Deku’s aptitude was measured by Eraserhead. Bakugo was quick to scoff, convinced that there was no way Deku had a quirk. When proven wrong, Bakugo was immediately enraged. He lunged at Deku, unable to believe that Deku was really capable of having such a powerful quirk. He simply couldn’t comprehend that Deku was actually strong and worth competing with.

6 He Lost To Deku Because He Was Convinced Deku Was Beneath Him

During Class 1-A’s battle trial, Katsuki and Deku had an opportunity to fight each other. Although Katsuki was angry that Deku had supposedly tricked him for so many years, he still hadn’t acknowledged him as a powerful person.

During the fight, Katsuki was confident that although Deku had a quirk, Deku had no chance of winning. He even went so far as to tell Deku that he was beneath him, and only finally began to acknowledge Deku’s strength after Deku defeated him.

5 He Couldn’t Motivate Shoto

Katsuki was motivated to prove himself as the very best in the U.A. Sports Festival. He was even more excited when Shoto started to offensively use his flames for the first time. When it was time for them to fight, Shoto had run out of steam, as well as the motivation to win. Despite Katsuki’s attempts to convince Shoto to go all out in the same way that he did in his battle against Deku, but Shoto put no effort into their fight, leading to Katsuki’s least satisfying victory.

4 He Didn’t Listen To Deku In The Fight Against All Might

Despite the fact that they both knew how important it was for them to pass their exam, Deku and Katsuki could not get on the same page in the beginning. In this fight, All Might taught Katsuki that he still looked down on others. Katsuki said that he didn’t want to rely on other people, to the point where he would rather lose than work with Deku. However, he would quickly learn that he would have to change his attitude at least for a little while in order to meet his long-term goals.

3 He Failed His Provisional Hero License Exam

Although he is quick to tell Deku that he won’t hesitate to take him down, Katsuki and Shoto were the only ones from U.A. who failed to get their hero license. Although Katsuki was told time and time again that his attitude was a problem, he didn’t make any attempt to change it while talking to people in the rescue portion of the exam. Although he put his all into fighting, he didn’t put enough effort into comforting the people he was rescuing.

2 He Stops Being Competitive During His Remedial Course

Although Katsuki forgets about his rivalry with Shoto during the remedial course, this was for the best. Seeing himself in the kids, he and the other students teach the children that their quirks are for more than just fighting. He even tells the leader that looking down on others makes one blind to their own faults. He put aside his need to prove that he was the best, and taught the child something that took him ages to learn himself.

1 He Was Lazy In The Second Movie

Katsuki may be determined to prove he is better than his rivals, but he was much less motivated to do so during the beginning of their hero work on Nabu Island. In My Hero Academia: Heroes: Rising, the students of Class 1-A were taking calls and helping people around the island with various things. Katsuki was the only person who didn’t take a call, since he didn’t feel that it was important enough. This only made him look like a bum.
