Variety is reporting Sony Pictures and veteran TV director S.J. Clarkson (who directed several episodes of Netflix’s Marvel show Jessica Jones) are developing the first female-centric movie from Sony’s catalog of Marvel characters.
According to the Hollywood trade it is unconfirmed who the starring character will be, but they cite insiders who say there is a strong possibility it will be Madame Web, a precognitive mystic who has often acted as a mentor to Peter Parker.
Sony was previously reported to be developing a film based on Madame Web, as well as now canceled plans for Silver and Black, a film that would have paired Black Cat and Silver Sable. Variety cites unnamed sources stating that Sony may be seeking an A-list actor to play a younger version of Madame Web, who was originally an elderly woman in comic books but was later replaced with the younger Julia Carpenter, who was previously the second Spider-Woman.
No projected release date for the untitled film was reported.
