Updated July 3, 2019: Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: Far From Home earned a record $39.3 million in its Tuesday domestic debut, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That tops the previous North American Tuesday record-holder Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($37.4m), and the biggest previous domestic Tuesday debut, Amazing Spider-Man ($35m) – not adjusted for inflation.
That $39.3m is a record, but is slightly below THR‘s $40-$48m estimate from Monday afternoon. The Hollywood trade is sticking with its $150m+ tracking for the film’s six-day domestic start, however Sony is reported to be expecting $125m in that frame.
Original story form July 2, 2019: Spider-Man: Far From Home is projected to take in $40-$48 million Tuesday in its domestic opening day, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Citing unspecified early returns and a little bit of guesswork, THR expects the MCU Phase 3 finale to surpass 2012’s Amazing Spider-Man ($35m) to be the top Tuesday opener in North America ever and 2015’s The Force Awakens ($37.4m) for the best-ever Tuesday period.
Adding to that, the six-day domestic forecast for Far From Home has been escalated from $125m+ to $150m+ after early receipts today.
The well-received Far From Home also opened to $98m in China this past weekend – $29m ahead of Homecoming‘s opening in the country. That was the third best opening of an MCU film and fourth biggest superhero opening in the world’s second largest box office market behind Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War and Venom and seventh-largest Hollywood film ever.
