Peter Parker’s most famous uncle may not be around for Spider-Man: Far From Home (besides that suitcase), but judging by how his relationships with other characters are being defined in the lead-up to the film, he’ll have more than enough stand-ins – including his comic book foe Mysterio, who acts as something of a mentor in the movie.
“If Tony Stark was sort of the mentor in the previous films, we thought it would be interesting to play Mysterio as almost like the cool uncle,” director Jon Watts told Entertainment Weekly.
Oddly, these remarks somewhat mirror comments made by Watts about the role Nick Fury’s relationship with Peter Parker has in the film.
“If Tony is like the supportive cool uncle, Fury’s more like the mean new stepdad,” Watts said previously.
There’s one other new tidbit from EW: a still of Peter Parker and Mysterio meeting face-to-face – while actor Numen Acar’s “Dimitri” looks on in the background.

At the time of Acar’s casting, Newsarama speculated his “Dimitri” role could be connected to Spider-Man’s enemy the Chameleon, real name Dmitri Smerdyakov. While that remains unconfirmed, his clothes do bear a striking resemblance to those worn by Nick Fury.
What’s more, that new still seems to line up with a scene from the trailer where Nick Fury accompanies Spider-Man to a secret underground lair via boat – the same lair seemingly seen in the photo. After all, in both Peter is wearing the more blue version of the costume, which is expected to be replaced with the stealth and black-accent costumes later.
Why is that of note? Well, for one thing, it’s Fury that apparently pairs Spidey with Mysterio (as a hero) – and for another, we’re not entirely convinced that’s actually Nick Fury we’ve seen in previous footage. Assuming the scenes are sequential, would Fury and Dimitri co-exist in the same or connecting scenes wearing very similar clothing?
After all, with Mysterio (and potentially Chameleon) around, can we afford to take anything at face value?
Spider-Man: Far From Home is due out in theaters July 2.
